Few acts have had as much influence on popular music at-large as OutKast. The Atlanta-based duo, rappers Andre 3000 and Big Boi, helped to put Southern hip-hop on the map at a time when East and West coast rappers dominated the genre. Fusing funk and soul with their original and often outlandish points of view, OutKast spent the‘90s breaking into the mainstream.
By 2000, with the release of their fourth album, Stankonia, OutKast reached a whole new stratosphere of success. The duo parlayed the singles“B.O.B.(Bombs Over Baghdad),”“Ms. Jackson,” and“So Fresh, So Clean,” into two Grammys—for Best Rap Performance for a Duo or Group and Best Rap Album—and quadruple-platinum status. Just two short years later, Speakerboxx/The Love Below would make even those numbers look small.
